Peter’s beautiful Dawes renovation

Posted on

I wanted to say a big thank you to the your craftsmen who restored a 1961 Dawes Debonair given to me by a neighbour, shortly after her husband died. She had many fond memories of his bike, including trips with the local cycle club flying down from Baginton airport to Bristol for a day's ride in the Mendips, and a tour through Switzerland with the boy scouts. She couldn't bring herself to scrap it and wondered if I could do anything with it. Well I couldn't, but you guys certainly did! As you can see, the bike had seen better days, but had been in daily use for 50 years and I wanted to prepare it for the next 50. I love the way you've picked out the lugs, and preserved the head badge.
In keeping with my intention of continuing to use the bike daily, you fitted new bosses to take contemporary cantis and derailleurs, and re-tracked it to take standard hubs and rims. It rides beautifully.
It's been kitted out with Campag Veloce (the Power Torque bottom bracket fitted in the 50 year old BB shell with no problems at all), with most of the other components coming from Velo Orange (to keep a retro feel) - the Grande Cru Zeste brakes work perfectly with the Veloce levers. The wheels have Ambrosio hubs and Exal LX17 rims. Tyres are 700x28c Schwalbe Delta Cruiser gumwalls.
Once again, thanks so much for a fabulous job and I look forward to many years of adding my own stories to the bike's history. I look forward to popping in to the shop again some time soon...

PeterThank you Peter for the pictures and text.
