We are excited to announce the acquisition of Mercian Cycles, a beloved icon in the cycling community known for nearly 80 years of unparalleled craftsmanship and innovation in bicycle frame design. We have inherited an indelible legacy from all of the previous owners which we deeply respect and intend to honor as we move forward.
We are a team of four passionate cyclists from Derby, dedicated to securing the future of Mercian Cycles in Derby. We will continue to hand-build our frames in the heart of England, maintaining the heritage and spirit of Mercian Cycles while fostering innovation and growth. We recognise the challenges faced by the previous owners and understand the deep connections many have with the Mercian brand. Our goal is to ensure a seamless transition, honoring the past while embracing the future.
We would like to take this opportunity to thank Grant and Jane Mosley, who took over from Bill Betton in 2002. Grant, a long-time Mercian employee who started at a junior level, together with Jane, continued this legacy with great passion and commitment, maintaining the high standards and dedication to excellence that have always defined Mercian Cycles. It’s a testament to their passion for Mercian that they have continued to help us steer a course in to this next era.
We are pleased to announce that we have retained our talented craftsmen, whose expertise is the heart and soul of Mercian, and what makes each bicycle unique.
To our cherished Mercian community, we are here to support and grow the brand you love. We value your thoughts, memories, and pictures, and we encourage you to share them with us. We are proud to have saved Mercian Cycles, but we need you to keep it alive. Your continued support and involvement are crucial as we embark on this new chapter.
Thank you for your continued trust as we look forward to building on Mercian’s proud legacy, creating exceptional bicycles that honor the past, celebrate the present, and look toward the future.

It’s a great day for cycling….. Tour De France 2024 has just kicked off, and Mercian cycles is open for business!
Glad to know the Mercian brand will continue, I was getting worried about my next respray…… never seen a better paint job.
If I can do anything to help let me know! Just kidding, but this is so refreshing and good luck with the new business venture.
I am delighted to hear of the acquisition of Mercian cycles and hopefully the continued trading of this brand long into the future. I am long time owner of a Strada Special and fly the Mercian flag in Australia, where I often get admiring comments and people interested in the story.
Good luck for the future, I might even get a new frame to celebrate !!
Kind Regards
Mark
Such great news. I’ve been riding Mercians since 1982 and have been grieving for the marque. Best wishes for the future

Congratulations on saving Mercian Cycles. I bought my Mercian at The Spoke in Boulder, Colorado, USA in 1983, and have been riding it ever since. I sent it back to the factory for restoration a few years ago, and am absolutely thrilled with the work. My Mercian is still my favorite bike.
Dear Mercian Cycles,
Grant helped me acquire a custom King of Mercia a few years ago. How I love that bicycle–my own ideas worked out on a proven design with impeccable workmanship, class and style.
So sorry that the shop had a rough patch, so happy that bicycle enthusiasts stepped in with respect for Mercian’s history an eye on the future. I’ll keep an eye on your progress. I’m a pretty old fellow, but another Mercian in the fleet is not out of the question.
Best of luck.
Yours,
William Romp
As a proud owner of a Superlight and a Pro-Luggless I was saddened to hear of the apparent demise of this wonderful cycling and engineering tradition. So, to hear that it will now live on under new ownership is great news. I like many, will wish the new owners all the best in their endeavour and look forward to supporting them with custom in the future.
When I was a lad in Ilkeston in the late 50’s early 60’s, anyone who knew a thing or two about classy bikes wanted a Mercian. It took me another 45 years to finally treat myself to a custom built special audax, beautiful pearlecent blue paint job which both then, and still 20 years later, attracts admiring comments. All original components and kit still fine after 30k+miles. If Mercian maintains the standard of old, the brand is surely safe, and thanks to the 4 enthusiasts for their Allerton ‘Phoenix’ efforts!
