Following Mercian’s 80th Anniversary Festival of Steel, we were delighted to welcome Eddie White and Cherie Pridham to our new factory.
Eddie White was a valued founding member of the Mercian-Bantel Team, riding with the team between 1968 and 1979. It was a particular pleasure to welcome Cherie, who took time out of her busy WorldTour schedule as Sports Director of UAE Team L’Imad to join Eddie for the visit.
1946 was a special year: Paul Smith was born in Nottingham, Mercian Cycles was founded in Derby. Paul was a very good cyclist in his youth and rode Mercian bikes - his fondness for Mercian has remained, and the feeling is mutual. To help celebrate our 80th anniversaries, Paul has designed two special limited edition bikes, which were launched at Selfridges in early September.
After many months of effort, and a tremendous grant to help us on our way from Erewash Council, we launched three new eBike models at the end of August.
A great crowd attended our Festival of Steel ride out in August, to help celebrate the 80th anniversary of Mercian. Many thanks to Belper Cycling Club, and Andre Toczek in particular, for helping organise the event and doing a great job on the 4 rides. And a big thankyou to all those who attended the event - we estimate approx 300 people turned up to help us mark the day, but give it a few months and the estimate will have grown to 3000!
Congratulations to Jill Scott for completing her epic 388 mile "Coming Home" challenge, raising almost £500k for Sport Relief! Mercian were proud to help.
We doff a very large cycling cap to Greg James, who finished his 8-day pan-UK challenge in Edinburgh on Friday raising over £4.5mln. What an incredible amount!
After six decades Mercian Cycles workshop has moved.
Through the years there were a number of locations in Derby for the shop, the frame building workshop and sprayshop. But since about 1965 the frame building and painting was taking place at the Pontefract Street workshop.
Framebuilder Tim took the chance to head out on the Ventura All-road bike to go and pick up some dropouts from Bear Frame Supplies. An ideal opportunity to capture some video of the custom steel Ventura out on the gravel trails of the Derbyshire Peak District.
Leigh called into the shop the other day to pick up his Round the world frame. He is building it up over the weekend and we should have a picture of the complete bike sometime next week. You can see and follow his journey here on our site and also on leighs web site here. More news to follow regardi
We had Pat visit us today to show us his Vincitore track bike which his dad ordered from Mercian in 1958. The frame has recently been sprayed by us in 1996. As you see its been well looked after over the years with a few equipment upgrades. Pat's dad Stewart also had 2 King of Mercia cycles.
Hi There,
I recently took delivery of a Mercian 853o/s Pro Lugless frameset and have finally finished building it into a complete bike. I waited until I had done this before giving you guys some feedback. I rode the bike up and down Hartside near Penrith and Alston this morning for its first ride. Q
I've got a Mercian 853 Pro Lugless, which I had custom built in 2003, and which has carried me coast to coast across the Pyrenees four times. It has never let me down - indeed it has never even had a puncture! ( famous last words )
I first heard about Mercian from a close friend of mine called Just

After a request on the Twitter Peter from Colorado sent in this picture of his Vigorelli. Not much in the way of details but what he has sent in is below. The rear wheel looks like a sprint with a Vittoria tub ( not to sure on the front ) The hubs look like the old Super Record just before Campagno
I have 2,600 miles on the new Velocitia.
Attached is a photo taken during the (Sunday) time of the Paris Roubaix. Wet and nasty it was and quite a bit crunchy. Then the post ride cleaned up. As you can see, I am not afraid to ride the bike in the crud.
Frame is set up all Campagnolo Super
This is fab. Its been made by Chris who is one of Mercians biggest fans. I have photo shopped out his last name the best i can do and made a slight mess of it but as you can see a lot of work has gone into this. I think he could sell these quite easily.
This is Leigh, we are supplying a frame and fork (this is not his frame) for his epic journey. It will be a Pro-Lugless built with Reynolds 631 oversize tubing with Rohloff ends . Leigh has been at the workshop most of the day going over the details for the frame. He still needs to decide on a colou
I just recently had my 1971 Mercian frame repaired and restored by you and I just finished building it up with period-correct components. Its a full Campagnolo Nuovo Record gruppo, except for the brakeset, which is a set of Weinmann centerpulls. Cinelli bar and stem, Super Champion rims, Brooks B-17
This advert was run by Reynolds some time ago now ( late 1970s we think ) . Its hung up in the workshop for all to see. There was a set of 3 posters but we only have this one left now. Mercian was asked to built the frames for this publicity run and the frame pictured was a King of Mercia . You ma
