Following Mercian’s 80th Anniversary Festival of Steel, we were delighted to welcome Eddie White and Cherie Pridham to our new factory.
Eddie White was a valued founding member of the Mercian-Bantel Team, riding with the team between 1968 and 1979. It was a particular pleasure to welcome Cherie, who took time out of her busy WorldTour schedule as Sports Director of UAE Team L’Imad to join Eddie for the visit.
1946 was a special year: Paul Smith was born in Nottingham, Mercian Cycles was founded in Derby. Paul was a very good cyclist in his youth and rode Mercian bikes - his fondness for Mercian has remained, and the feeling is mutual. To help celebrate our 80th anniversaries, Paul has designed two special limited edition bikes, which were launched at Selfridges in early September.
After many months of effort, and a tremendous grant to help us on our way from Erewash Council, we launched three new eBike models at the end of August.
A great crowd attended our Festival of Steel ride out in August, to help celebrate the 80th anniversary of Mercian. Many thanks to Belper Cycling Club, and Andre Toczek in particular, for helping organise the event and doing a great job on the 4 rides. And a big thankyou to all those who attended the event - we estimate approx 300 people turned up to help us mark the day, but give it a few months and the estimate will have grown to 3000!
Congratulations to Jill Scott for completing her epic 388 mile "Coming Home" challenge, raising almost £500k for Sport Relief! Mercian were proud to help.
We doff a very large cycling cap to Greg James, who finished his 8-day pan-UK challenge in Edinburgh on Friday raising over £4.5mln. What an incredible amount!
After six decades Mercian Cycles workshop has moved.
Through the years there were a number of locations in Derby for the shop, the frame building workshop and sprayshop. But since about 1965 the frame building and painting was taking place at the Pontefract Street workshop.
Framebuilder Tim took the chance to head out on the Ventura All-road bike to go and pick up some dropouts from Bear Frame Supplies. An ideal opportunity to capture some video of the custom steel Ventura out on the gravel trails of the Derbyshire Peak District.
My thanks for the beautiful refurbishment of my beloved Claud Butler Majestic. I have to say I think you guys have surpassed even your own previous effort on this frame. The Deep Flam Blue is even deeper and more vibrant than I remembered from last time around. It looks deep enough to dive into!
Last week I found myself traveling to New Zealand for work; why not
take the bike? Here are photos of my S&S coupled Mercian in its case
(loaned at last minute from Larry at Mt Airy Bicycles, Mt Airy, MD
USA); after 20 hours of flying, reassembled at the Auckland airport
and ready to roll; noth
Hi all at Mercian Cycles,
Here are some shots of my Higgins frame recently restored by your good selves, now built up and on the road...
I now also have mud guards fitted and have had to change the saddle as the Brooks has defeated me, although I might have another go later!
The bike is fitted with
Here is a photo of us at the 10th annual "Tour Dem Parks, Hon" in
Baltimore, MD USA, a few weeks ago, 35 urban miles. In total about
3000 miles or so since build. Bike rides smoothly and corners
responsively. The belt squeaks when dirty, but then I ride through a
puddle and we're fine. With the

The attached 1980 Mercian has now moved permanently to Cape Town, South Africa.
I can no longer read the number under the bottom bracket, but I believe it was 3xx 1980.
Also as promised some pics of my fixie – which took me a while to get some satisfactory results – attached but still not the best as being a white pearl finish it catches the light and doesn't really photograph as well as I'd like…
I've been meaning to send you guys a photo for a while. Here's my Mercian crossing over a causeway just off the Gulf of Mexico. 531c, allegedly circa 1984 (I'm not the original owner). Rides like a dream, and when it's time for a new bike I will definitely be headed to you for another.
A lousy iPhone picture, but proof of road worthiness. Have to admit to being somewhat apprehensive - what if Reynolds 725 doesn't ride as nicely as my 30 yr old 531 Mercian? Shouldn't have been concerned. What an outstanding bike! Stiffer but still plenty of liveliness. A real looker too! I am
